Can I use aero wheels while on a trainer?
Hi, I have a pair of bontrager Aeolus carbon wheels on my bike currently, and I am getting ready to put it on the trainer. I was wondering if the trainer could possibly cause any damage to the wheels (flexing and tension?)?
Thanks.
Answer:
The trainer is not likely to harm the wheel with normal, but it might harm your skewer. Keep items away from your wheel that might fall over and hit your wheel riding--that's only real danger to your wheel.
The nice skewers that come with aero wheels often have smaller ends in more square/angular shape. They won't hold up well to be pressed together in the trainer. The best skewer to use with a trainer is a really tough, steel skewer with round-shaped ends. Even with that, the compression of a trainer can sometimes lead to the skewer bending a little. That's not a problem if it's a tough skewer you use only on the trainer, but it's not a good idea for the light weight skewer that comes with your wheels.
Also, your regular tires may wear quickly by using them on the trainer. A cheap, heavy training tire, or even a special trainer tire will save your nice tires for when you're back out on the road. The Continental Ultra Sport Hometrainer is an example of a tire designed for use on a trainer. http://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?page=8&description=Ultra+Sport+Hometrainer&vendorCode=CONTI&major=1&minor=27
