How far should I hold my infrared thermometer from the heat sink on my Savage X 4.6?
I am trying to test my engine temp. At the top of the heat sink, it said 220 degrees, but inside the heat sink it said that the engine temp was 250 degrees. I don't think the difference of 2 or 3 inches should make this large of a difference.

As you increase the distance, a infrared thermometer's area that it is picking up will increase. Its more of an average temp over the area rather than a pinpoint reading. Up close its sensing a area the size of a pencil eraser, 3 inches back and your sensing a area triple the up close area.
