Switching flights in LAX and DFW?
I have two different connections at LAX (to Tokyo) and DFW (from Tokyo). The layover time between each is roughly 2 hours. So, assuming the plane lands on time:
- 2 hours should be enough time to get from presumably Terminal 3 (arriving by Alaska Airlines), through security and stuff to the Tom Bradley terminal, right?
- Is 2 hours enough time to get through customs and reach my gate at DFW? Both flights are operated by American Airlines if it matters.
Both flights are on Tuesday and Wednesday so the airport should be less crowded (I think?). I will not be checking bags either.

With respect to your connection at LAX, two hours should be sufficient for a transfer from T3 to TBIT. You'll have to leave security in order to make the transfer, but these terminals are right next to each other -- the first link below has a terminal map of TBIT, which shows these terminals' proximity to one another. The walk between the two is less than 5 minutes, so even if the security long at TBIT is long, you shouldn't have a problem.
If your LAX-NRT flight is on American, though, you should check and see whether the flight is actually leaving from TBIT or from Terminal 4 -- many of AA's international flights leave from T4 instead of TBIT. If this is the case, then you do not even need to leave security in order to make the transfer. American operates a shuttle bus that runs inside of security, betweeen Terminal 3 (at gate 39) and Terminal 4 (at gate 44). You'll need to show your boarding pass in order to use the shuttle, but this bus (which goes along the tarmac and around the airport) eliminates the need to leave security and re-enter at T4, if that is where your flight is going. This shuttle runs every 15 minutes or so and takes about 10 minutes to make the trip, which is generally faster than walking to T4 and re-entering security there.
With respect to your return connection at DFW, 2 hours should be enough time to get through customs, re-enter security, and get to your connecting gate. The published minimum connection time between international and domestic flights at DFW is actually significantly less than that -- only an hour and ten minutes, according to the second page below -- so a two-hour connection affords quite a bit more time than AA themselves thinks is necessary.
The only advice that I would give is that, because you leave security after going through Customs/Immigration, you go back through security at Terminal D, even if your connecting flight is in a different terminal. Even though American uses four different terminals at DFW -- A, B, C, and D -- they will allow a passenger to enter at any terminal, even if they're flying out of a different one. If you enter at Terminal D and are flying out of A, B, or C, you can then use the DFW Skylink system, which is the rail system that links all of the terminals behind security, to make a connection between the terminals. The Skylink trains run every few minutes, and reduce the time it takes to get long distances at DFW to a minimum.
I'd also note that all of the advice I've given assumes that all of your flights have been purchased on the same ticket. If you've purchased separate tickets for any portion of this journey, then two hours is likely not enough, as it may require you to claim and recheck baggage somewhere along the way. Also, if there are delays at any point that might cause you to miss a flight on a separate ticket, you would be held responsible for making new arrangements.
