Wall Chasers - ToolsRUs
Convenient, fast and very powerful, wall chasers are handheld power tools used by masonry workers as well as electricians to cut grooves into brick walls. The tool features one or dual rotating abrasive discs - similar to a grinder - that protrude from the flat of bottom of the tool perpendicular to it. When held against a wall and pulled or pushed in some direction, the discs cut into it, making a groove.

Wall chasers are used to carve out channels, called chases, into brick so electrical pipe or wiring can be installed. Unlike wood-framed walls that have ample empty space to use for wiring and other electrical components, a brick wall is solid. The wall is built first then the channels or grooves are made for the purpose of running electrical cables. Before the tool's invention, chases were made by hand using a hammer and chisel. A hammer and chase chisel might still be used over small areas when using a large power tool would be impractical.
Most chasers feature an adjustment mechanism that lets you increase or decrease the depth of the abrasive disc. From job to job, the depth or width of the chase might change, necessitating an adjustment. To save time, adjustments can be made quickly. The tools typically have a dust collection bag attached or a fitting to channel dust away from the work area to prevent it from bothering the operator. To reduce the amount of fine dust particles you might otherwise inhale, you should always wear a mask when using this power tool. Protective eyewear and ear plugs are two other must-haves when using, for the tool is loud and can brick to chip.
Vertical slots are typically made by pulling the machine downward, while horizontal chases are made by pushing the tool. A good, versatile chaser should allow for both types of cuts. The power tool draws a lot of amps, so it is not without a cord. They also feature a useful helper handle atop the blade area for two-handed operation. A depth scale to make quick disc adjustments, overload and heat protection, a soft start function to get up to speed and a trigger lock for safety are other common features.
