People that have flat feet are often said to suffer from fallen arches. The arch is composed of the bones of the mid-foot. The foot actually has 26 bones all attached bytendons, ligaments and muscles. For you to walk around the joints of the foot all function in concert in a coordinated pattern. The efficient, smooth operation of the foot usually requires that every one of these joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles function together in a complex, coordinated pattern. The arch of the foot and also the joints that constitute the arch, carry out an important role in the correct operation of the foot.
The heel hits the floor to start with if you take a step. As the center of the foot begins to take up the load, the foot rotates in the direction of the ground in a motion called pronation. Throughout pronation the arch flattens out a little as the foot rotates in the direction of the ground. Pronation is important because it allows the foot to absorb impact. Furthermore, pronation allows all of the bones of the mid-foot to unlock and become loose and freely moblile. Being a loose bag of bones enables the foot to adapt to uneven ground (uphill, downhill, rocky surface, and so on). As you go further along in the step the foot undergoes a motion called supination. Supination is the opposite of pronation. In supination the foot turns away from the surface and relocks all of the bones of the mid-foot to allow the foot to become rigid as you push off from the floor and propel yourself forward.
