The Importance Of High Visibility Clothing
Different activities require specific types of clothing. This is true as different activities and places demand specific attires whether for office, sports, acrobatics and day to day work wear among others. Custom clothing serves several purposes and among them are identity and uniformity.
High visibility clothing possesses highly reflective property or colors which significantly stands out from the background for easy citation. A common example for this is the reflective yellow or green waistcoats worn by rescue teams, traffic controllers, cyclists and site workers.
Hi vis clothing are mostly used when a person needs to be seen where there is poor lighting. It could be in the evenings, poor lighted places, in the misty or in foggy weather conditions and when working in environment with many moving machinery. This high visibility clothing is suitable for pedestrians upon advice to wear bright or reflective jackets for easier visibility and safety.
The significance of this hi vis clothing cannot be overemphasized. The United States’ government under the federal law put a requirement that all the personnel working on federally funded highways wear high visibility vests since 2008. At the same time, all firefighters are required to have high visibility clothing (of course, not an embroidered workwear) uniform except while putting out fires or in handling hazardous materials situations. The same applies for paramedics and law enforcement officers, tow truck operators, and load workers are legally required to wear high visibility clothing. The police are exempted only when engaged in activities such as traffic stops or when need for disguise is required.
In the United Kingdom, they stated clearly in the health and safety regulations that persons who work in low visibility environments or areas of high risks should wear the prescribed hi vis clothing. Some of the European countries like France, Australia, Portugal and Spain demand that all drivers should be provided with high visibility clothing which are EU certified reflective material to be worn in emergency situations that might necessitate the driver to exit the vehicle.
Hi vis clothing come in various styles of jackets and other items such as the breathable and non breathable wet weather coats and over trousers, carry bags, laptop bags and shopping bags, t-shirts and polo t-shirts, waist coats with EN510 standards and without.
Presently, there are many ISO member bodies that publish standards for high visibility clothing for use of personal protection. The standards put into consideration the color and retroflection recommended arrangements of materials designs used. The current standard also requires hi vis clothing to be flame resistant which must be well marked by the manufacturer.
