Knocking On Wooden Rooftop Tanks
A few people actually look at them as fat containers with sharp pointy party hats. They are sometimes hidden behind brick walls when the owners are displeased with the sight of them. There are two men who find these tanks a great source of family pride. These two gentlemen inherited the rivalry of their families in the business of wooden tanks and these families have been at it for almost a century.
The competing companies are responsible for basically all of the rooftop tanks in New York City. New Yorkers still greatly rely upon these wooden tanks despite the incredible changes the society is leaping into and these two gentlemen find it highly entertaining. Not all of New York's water tanks are made of wood, some are made of steel like the one used by the Empire State Building. But wood is preferred over steel because it provides better insulation, it is easily fixed and it does not have a need for repainting every half a decade. These wooden tanks last more than a lifetime in fact a tank built in 1926 was only recently replaced. These tanks have become a fundamental part of the New York City landscape given that most of the buildings in New York City have them. Water tanks need to be always present in the horizon.
Easy access to water in case of fire is the reason for legally requiring tall buildings to have a water tank set up on their rooftop. Not all buildings in New York City utilize water tanks on their roofs some resorted to the use of electrical pumps to deliver water to the top. However, the availability of water on the top floors of these buildings requires these pumps to be constantly running. When the water levels in these rooftop tanks drop to a specific level, this is the only time that the electrical pumps are turned on to carry more water to the rooftop, making these tanks highly economical and efficient. Every floor of the building obtains the amount of water it requires through the pull of gravity. A 20foot steel frame holds the tank in place, which by itself measures 12 feet in height and has a capacity of 10000 gallons. The height makes tank work on a windy day dangerous if not impossible.
Rooftop tanks are made of redwood or cedar staves and galvanized iron hoops, installed on the rooftop itself. Aside from keeping the tank rain, snow and contaminant free, the pyramidal lids also has an insulation role by trapping air inside during winter. These tanks are watertight through the hoops that press in and the water that presses out. One of the tank companies built its headquarters in Brooklyn while the other company is in Philadelphia.
