Help! How do you remove a rusted and stuck faucet stem?!?
My husband is trying to replace our old faucets circa 1970. He is trying to remove the old faucet but it has rusted and is just stuck. He tries to loosen the nut holding the stem, but the whole thing just spins. He's at the hardware store right now asking for help, but I thought I'd put the question to all of you on Y!A also.
I'm thinking a saws-all to cut right through the stem, but this sounds pretty drastic, my husband is hoping for a simpler solution. He's saturated the whole thing with WD-40 to try to loosen it, but no improvement yet.
Anybody have any other suggestions?

Just last week I thought I would change the handles on my shower and update things..well, one came off, the other was stuck and no matter what I soaked it with it wouldn't budge...until I finally broke the stem off with the Handel..
Ended up replacing both handles and stems..they had become rusty and the rubber parts were getting cracked...you may want to do the same. My house sounds about the same age as yours, and since the parts are hidden from view you don't know if they are leaking inside the wall.
If you do replace the stems, be sure to get the tool for removing it...can't remember the correct name but your hardware service person will know. There is nothing else that works as well, (I know, I tried to make my own...) It's not very expensive and will save you tons of time!!
