How do I fix this box fan?
Note: I'm not interested in just having a fan, I want to see if I can fix this.
I bought it at a yard sale and the plastic blade set is pretty seized up, no spin to it. What should I do and what sort of lubricant should I buy? I'm not sure how you "oil" a fan to get it spinning, or with the motor. Could someone guide me through this?
Answer:
As Robert said, take it apart. Get it to where the motor is exposed. Clean the shaft where it goes through the sleeves. I like to lubricate with silicone spray but WD40 does work. Once you get it clean and lubricated it should spin freely. If it won't turn on at that point, the motor is probably burned up, otherwise you should be able to reassemble it and have a working fan. Keep it lubricated with a light oil, and yes, avoid spraying the motor itself. That will just allow it to build up quicker with dirt.
